Aids Awareness Cell

Lucknow Christian College has established “AIDS Awareness Cell” to make, students and the through them the public in general, aware and educate about HIV (AIDS Virus), HIV infection and AIDS disease.

HIV/AIDS is the world’s leading infectious killer claiming more than 27 million lives since the start of the epidemic in 1981. At present there are about 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the world.

HIV (Human Immune-deficiency Virus) is responsible for AIDS in all groups of people from new born to adult, and in all strata of the society. So HIV is commonly known as AIDS virus which destroys the immune system of a person. It infects cells of immune system of a person. It infects cells of immune system and destroys or impairs their functions. HIV infection results in the progressive deterioration of the immune system, breaking down the natural body’s ability to defend the infections and diseases.

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is not a single disease but a collection of so many opportunistic infections, diseases and certain rare cancers in a HIV positive person. It appears only after the complete deterioration of the immune system of a HIV positive person. It is the advanced stage or last stage of HIV infection taking between 2 to 10 years of more to appear in a HIV positive person.

Till date there is no permanent cure and treatment for HIV/AIDS. The anti-retro-viral therapy (ART) is to reduce and check on the HIV activity in the body, but it cannot eliminate the HIV completely from the body. So HIV/AIDS awareness is the ultimate remedy for this. HIV/AIDS education among the youth generation is now needed because HIV/AIDS easily affects the young people who are in their productive years. The basic HIV/AIDS education enables young people to protect themselves from becoming infected with HIV.

The Cell works hard to spread the awareness among the masses by way of organizing Lectures, Poster Competitions, debates and rallies etc. Every year on 1st December – “World AIDS Day”, an exhibition on different issues related to the HIV/AIDS is also organized by the AIDS Awareness Cell.
